Cricket fever is always at an all-time high, and nothing unites fans quite like a historic victory. However, online scammers are actively capitalizing on the excitement of Royal Challengers Bengaluru (RCB) fans.
A viral message has been circulating rapidly on WhatsApp, Telegram, and Facebook claiming that to celebrate RCB’s iconic victory, telecom giants like Jio, Airtel, and Vi are providing a free 3-month mobile recharge worth ₹799 (or cash rewards up to ₹5,000) to every Indian citizen.
If you have received this message, do not click the link. Here is everything you need to know about this scam and how to protect yourself.
The viral message usually looks something like this:
“🏆 RCB WINS IPL TROPHY! 🏆 To celebrate Royal Challengers Bengaluru’s historic victory, JIO, Vi, and Airtel are providing a free ₹799 recharge with 3 months validity to all Indian citizens. Click the link below to claim your free recharge now! Offer valid for a limited time only! 🛑 [Suspicious Link Here]”
Some variations of this scam also use fake Dream11-style banners featuring Virat Kohli, claiming that users can claim a ₹5,000 cash reward directly into their bank accounts.
Why Is This a Scam? How it Works
Cybersecurity experts and fact-checkers have officially flagged these links as fraudulent phishing traps. Here is exactly how the scammers trick innocent fans:
- Impersonation: The links direct you to unverified, third-party blogs or websites using fake logos of popular telecom brands or IPL sponsors to look official.
- Data Harvest: Once on the site, you are asked to enter sensitive information, including your full name, mobile number, and telecom operator.
- The Chain-Reaction Trap: Before you can “claim” the offer, the website forces you to share the link with 5 to 10 WhatsApp groups or friends. This is how the scam spreads like wildfire.
- Financial & Malicious Risks: In worst-case scenarios, the site prompts you to download a malicious app, redirects you to fake UPI portals, or attempts to steal your OTPs to compromise your bank accounts.
